Coles Campbelltown worker’s heartwarming gesture goes viral

Supermarket aisles haven’t been the friendliest of places in recent weeks, with frustration boiling over thanks to shelves stripped bare by coronavirus panic-buyers.

Police were even forced to patrol some stores after a number of violent brawls broke out, particularly over toilet paper shortages.

And so, the kindness displayed by a Coles store manager in Sydney, captured on video, has gone viral online for all the right reasons.

Last week, during a special hour allocated for elderly Australians to get their essentials, away from the crowds, Vony Fazzino went above and beyond to make the customers feel comfortable.

The Coles Campbelltown manager was filmed wrapping jackets around some older people who were cold, providing chairs for those who were waiting for more stock and even giving out biscuits.

“I just noticed that a few of the elderly people waiting in line for toilet paper were shivering,” Ms Fazzino told the Macarthur Advertiser.

“We had freezer jackets out the back, so I grabbed some for them just to make their wait a little easier.”

Another shopper whipped out their mobile phone to capture Ms Fazzino’s community spirit and shared the footage to Facebook.

It’s since gone viral, being shared across local community and media pages, attracting hundreds of comments and thousands of re-shares.

“This is awesome. The staff must be under enormous pressure at the moment and to see this manager go out of her way to assist in the comfort of her elderly customers is heartwarming,” one commenter wrote.

Another said: “What a lovely way to handle such a crazy time. This is going beyond her duties and I hope Coles recognises the way she treats their customers.”

But for those who live in the area, Ms Fazzino’s kindness is apparently not a one-off – she’s famed for her friendliness, according to Facebook comments from Campbelltown Coles regulars.

She told the Macarthur Advertiser that the attention, especially during such a tense time, had seen her staff adopt the motto “Be Like Von”.

Over previous weeks, Ms Fazzino said she had witnessed a few customers behaving aggressively.

“I think most people understand that we are all in this together,” she said. “We all need to – e patient –and be safe, especially now.

“We need to be taking care of each other. We’ve been through fires, floods and now this, so we just need to come together in the same way to get through it together.”
